Interior Decorating: Tips to Get Started in the Right Direction

With all of the great options – from flooring to accessories – that are available today, it’s easy to become overwhelmed when trying to update the look of a room.

But a few basic tips can help get you off on the right foot.

And tip #1 is probably the most basic: Your first consideration should be functionality.

Think carefully about each piece – do you plan to use it for practical purposes, or is its function purely decorative? If you want to use a piece for practical purposes, does it actually meet your goal?

Functionality is critical to finding the right furnishings for a room. Furniture should:

  • Conform to the room’s scale and dimensions
  • Be comfortable
  • Fit the people who will use it the most

Beyond that, personalization is the theme for today’s interior design.

Rigidly matched furniture suites are considered passé now. In fact, you can mix a sleek, contemporary sofa with your favorite table from grandma’s house, or find a special piece at a local shop that stands out and becomes the room’s focal point.

Current trends include:

Hardwood flooring or ceramic tile, sometimes paired with patterned rugs that provide interesting visual or sculpted designs.

Blinds and shades, which provide a contemporary look in window treatments but, when combined with fabric treatments, are a warm, interesting update on yesterday’s sheers and drapes.

Paint to pick up the colors you like in a piece you’re keeping – or a new piece you love, or just as an accent wall. Every wall in your house doesn’t have to be Classic Ivory or Cancun Sand.
